Room 712

Chapter 15 - Room 712

Room 712 had been sealed since the hotel fire inspection three years earlier. Marcus unlocked it with the keycard while Claire and Ortiz waited behind him.

Inside, dust lay over everything except the desk.

A red light blinked on an old camera facing the chair.

Claire sat.

The camera activated a projector. Noah appeared on the wall, older than in the first recording.

“If Claire is watching this,” he said, “then Julian has fallen, and I still have not found a safe way home.”

Lily, watching from the doorway under Ortiz’s supervision, whispered, “Daddy.”

Noah explained the final layer of the scheme. Julian had not created the surveillance network. He inherited it from a private consortium of hotel owners, political consultants, and security contractors known as the Meridian Circle. The Cross Foundation had been one branch.

The person who ordered Noah’s staged death was not Julian. It was the Circle’s coordinator, identified only as “The Steward.”

Noah had infiltrated the network to gather evidence. Every delay in returning home had been purchased with another threat against Claire and Lily.

“I told myself that absence was protection,” he said. “Sometimes that was true. Sometimes it was cowardice.”

Claire closed her eyes at the honesty of it.

The video provided coordinates for a data vault beneath the old Mercy Harbor ferry terminal. Federal teams raided the location and seized servers containing decades of blackmail material.

The Steward’s identity file, however, had been removed minutes earlier.

Security footage showed a masked person leaving through a service tunnel.

Lily stepped closer to the projected image. “Can he see us?”

“No,” Claire said.

On-screen, Noah looked directly into the camera.

“Lily, if you are there, I need you to remember the game. Count the red lights from the ballroom to the river. The last one points home.”

Marcus pulled up the hotel map. Twelve cameras formed a path from the ballroom through service corridors to the riverside exit. The thirteenth camera had been removed from the map years ago.

They followed the route at dawn.

The last red light glowed above an abandoned boathouse.

Inside they found a cot, medical supplies, and fresh blood. A man had been there hours earlier. On the table sat Noah’s broken fountain pen and a photograph of Claire and Lily sleeping in the protected apartment.

Someone had been watching them.

But on the back Noah had written: NOT THE ENEMY. CAMERA IN THE HALL.

Ortiz checked the corridor.

A hidden camera faced the boathouse door. Its feed transmitted to a nearby van registered to a federal contractor.

The contractor belonged to an assistant director supervising the Cross investigation.

The Meridian Circle had people inside law enforcement.

Ortiz shut off her radio.

“We do this carefully now,” she said.

For the first time, Claire understood why Noah had stayed hidden.

Julian was dangerous.

The people above him were everywhere.
