Five years after sentencing, Olivia visited Marcus once.
He looked older and less certain.
He asked whether she had come to prove she won.
“No.”
“Then why?”
“I wanted to know whether you understand what happened before the cars arrived.”
Marcus thought for a long time.
“I thought your calm meant you were weak.”
Olivia waited.
“I thought Evelyn’s wealth made her correct. I thought my career made me entitled to manage you. Then the screen turned on, and I was ashamed because I had chosen the wrong powerful person.”
He looked at her.
“The truth is that there should not have been a correct powerful person to obey.”
Olivia nodded.
That was the first complete sentence he had offered.
