The Cars Outside Bellgrave House

Chapter 02 - The Cars Outside Bellgrave House
The convoy did not carry armed men.
It carried attorneys, forensic accountants, an independent physician, corporate compliance officers, and trustees appointed years before Marcus joined the company.
The first white car stopped beneath the portico.
Naomi Bell stepped out wearing a navy coat and carrying a sealed evidence case. Behind her came Grace Lin, Vale Crown’s chief operating officer, and Daniel Ortiz, director of independent property security.
Marcus moved toward the hall.
“You cannot bring outsiders into Mrs. Shaw’s home.”
Evelyn spoke before Olivia could.
“It is not my home.”
The words were almost inaudible.
Marcus turned.
Evelyn sat down heavily.
Bellgrave House had been occupied by Shaw executives for twenty-three years. Its portraits, furnishings, and gardens were associated publicly with Evelyn’s leadership.
The deed belonged to Hale Residential Trust.
Evelyn possessed a revocable stewardship license.
The key in Olivia’s hand activated an emergency clause whenever a beneficiary reported coercion involving trust-backed assets.
Daniel remained several feet from Marcus.
“Mr. Vale, no one is preventing you from leaving. Documents, devices, and company property must remain until the preservation order is served.”
Marcus looked toward Olivia.
“You set this up.”
“No,” she answered. “You triggered it.”
Naomi approached Evelyn.
“Mrs. Shaw, your operational access is suspended pending review of the Meridian Harbor transaction.”
Evelyn’s hands began to shake.
Marcus mistook the reaction for fear on his behalf.
He moved closer to her.
“I will protect you.”
May you like
Evelyn looked at him with exhausted contempt.
“You still do not understand who needs protection from whom.”
