The Phone Beneath the Table

Chapter 01 - The Phone Beneath the Table
Claire Bennett was five months pregnant when the soup bowl tipped across the dining-room carpet.
The liquid had cooled before dinner, but the humiliation was deliberate.
Celeste Grant stood beside the table in a black evening dress and smiled as if nothing unusual had happened.
“Pick up the photographs,” she said.
Three ultrasound images lay in the spill near Claire’s knees.
Across the table, Claire’s husband Julian Ashford remained seated in his dark suit. His mother, Evelyn Ashford, watched from the far end with both hands folded beside her plate.
Claire looked at Julian.
“Are you going to let her speak to me like this?”
Julian avoided her eyes.
“Just collect the papers, Claire. Then we can discuss the agreement calmly.”
The agreement sat beside his wineglass.
It was described as a temporary prenatal medical authorization. In reality, it allowed Julian to control Claire’s treatment, her unborn child’s records, and the Bennett Maternal Health Trust if a physician declared her emotionally unstable.
Celeste had been introduced as the Ashford Foundation’s legal consultant.
Claire had learned that afternoon that she was also Julian’s mistress.
Celeste nudged one ultrasound image farther across the carpet with the tip of her shoe.
“You wanted proof of what happens when you embarrass this family. There it is.”
Claire lowered herself carefully, one hand protecting her stomach.
Her phone remained inside the small purse beneath her chair.
The call had never disconnected.
Minutes earlier, Claire had phoned her father, Richard Bennett, and whispered only one sentence before Celeste entered.
“Please listen. Don’t say anything.”
Richard was still there.
Claire picked up the first ultrasound image.
Celeste placed a pen on the floor beside it.
“Sign.”
Claire looked at the document and spoke clearly.
“You want me to authorize Dr. Mercer to declare me incapable before the baby is born.”
Julian’s head lifted.
Celeste’s smile disappeared.
Claire continued for the person listening through the phone.
“And you want the child’s trust transferred to Ashford Medical Group.”
The double doors opened.
Richard Bennett entered in a black suit, followed by District Attorney Lena Ortiz and two evidence officers.
“No one touches the table,” Richard said.
Julian stood abruptly.
“This is a private family dinner.”
Richard looked at the ultrasound images in Claire’s hands.

“No. It became an active fraud investigation the moment your consultant asked my daughter to sign away an unborn child’s identity.”
Beneath Claire’s chair, the phone continued recording.
