The Ultrasound with Two Names

Chapter 03 - The Ultrasound with Two Names
The ultrasound images appeared ordinary until an independent obstetrician examined the labels.
Two different patient numbers had been printed on the corners.
One belonged to Claire Bennett Ashford.
The other belonged to a woman named Caroline Reed.
Both files described the same fetus.
Caroline Reed did not exist in public records.
Yet Ashford Medical Group had billed the Bennett fund for specialized prenatal treatment under her name for three months.
The second identity allowed the clinic to create medical notes Claire could not access.
In Caroline’s file, the pregnancy was classified as high risk.
The notes described confusion, medication refusal, and concern that the mother might endanger the child by rejecting recommended residential care.
Claire had never been offered residential care.
The file recommended transfer to Haven House during the final trimester.
Haven House was a private maternity center operated by Celeste Grant’s family.
Richard recognized the name.
Amelia had investigated Haven House before her death six years earlier.
She suspected the center used duplicate prenatal identities to bill charities and control custody decisions after delivery.
The investigation ended when Amelia died in a highway accident.
No criminal cause had been established.
Celeste claimed the duplicate number was an administrative mistake.
Ortiz asked why her signature appeared beside every entry in Caroline Reed’s account.
Celeste said she served as legal coordinator.
The phone recording captured her saying something different at dinner.

“Once Claire enters Haven, the baby’s record becomes ours.”
The unborn child had been given a second identity before taking a first breath.
