The Woman Called Patient R-17

Chapter 06 - The Woman Called Patient R-17
Ortiz obtained a warrant for Haven House.
The public facility contained bright rooms, gardens, and prenatal classes.
The lower level contained a restricted wing absent from licensing documents.
Patient R-17 occupied the final room.
She was Rachel Stone.
Her file described severe delusions involving stolen babies and charitable fraud.
Independent doctors found her oriented and capable of making decisions.
Rachel had spent six years under an emergency guardianship signed by Evelyn Grant.
She had repeatedly requested contact with Richard and Claire.
Every letter was intercepted.
Rachel told investigators that Amelia survived her highway accident long enough to reach a private hospital.
Amelia believed someone had sabotaged her car, but Rachel had never found proof.
The official medical record said Amelia died at the roadside.
A private record showed she lived for eleven days.
During that time, she dictated the trust protections and named people involved in the duplicate-identity system.
Rachel copied the files.
Victor discovered her.
She was declared unstable and moved to Haven House.
The records did not prove Amelia was murdered.
They proved her final testimony was hidden.
Rachel asked about Claire.
When told she and the baby were safe, Rachel cried.
“She listened before they completed the second file.”

That mattered.
Many women at Haven House never learned another identity existed beside their own.
