Celeste’s Counterattack

Chapter 11 - Celeste’s Counterattack

Celeste filed for personal bankruptcy on a Thursday morning.

By Thursday afternoon, she transferred jewelry, artwork, and two houses into trusts controlled by her sister.

The receiver challenged the transfers.

Celeste then accused Amelia of threatening her physically at the wedding.

A witness came forward claiming Amelia shoved Celeste before the recorded clip began.

The witness was Lydia Price, daughter of an Ashford board member.

Her statement dominated the news for forty-eight hours.

Then the ballroom’s full security footage was recovered.

It showed Celeste approaching Amelia, ordering staff to lock the doors, and instructing a photographer to begin recording. Amelia never touched her.

The footage also captured Celeste whispering to Lydia before the confrontation.

“Say she moved first.”

Lydia withdrew her statement and accepted immunity in exchange for testimony.

Celeste’s remaining supporters began to panic.

Board members provided emails.

Assistants produced calendars.

A former housekeeper delivered shredded documents she had saved after being told to burn them.

Celeste had built loyalty through access to money and status. Once those rewards disappeared, loyalty became an inventory of evidence.

Daniel visited his mother at the estate before the receiver took possession.

The grand rooms were half-empty. Art had been removed, leaving pale rectangles on the walls.

Celeste sat beneath a portrait of William.

“You brought investigators into your father’s company,” she said.

“You brought fraud into it.”

“I preserved what he built.”

“You preserved your control.”

She looked toward the portrait.

“Your father would hate what you are doing.”

Daniel took William’s journal from his coat.

“He hated what he did.”

Celeste’s face changed.

She had not known the journal survived.

Daniel read the final entry aloud.

If Daniel ever learns the truth, I hope he is braver than I was. Celeste will call bravery betrayal. She has always confused the two.

Celeste stood.

“That man left me with impossible choices.”

“He left you with consequences.”

She slapped the journal from his hand.

The gesture reminded Daniel of the ring falling at the wedding.

Objects struck floors around Celeste whenever people stopped obeying.

He picked up the journal.

“I love you,” he said.

She stared at him, surprised.

“That is not the same as protecting you from the truth.”

For the first time, Celeste looked afraid of her son rather than angry with him.

May you like

Not because he threatened her.

Because he no longer needed her version of the past.
