The Vows They Did Not Make

Chapter 14 - The Vows They Did Not Make

Six months after the wedding that failed, Amelia and Daniel returned to the Grand Aurelia ballroom.

There were no flowers.

The chandeliers were being cleaned, and half the mirrors were covered for restoration. The cracked panel behind the confrontation had been removed.

Daniel carried the ring in a small box.

“I am not proposing,” he said.

“That is a disappointing opening.”

“I am returning property.”

“The ring was yours.”

“I purchased it for you.”

“With money earned from a company partly built by my father.”

“That makes the accounting complicated.”

They sat on the edge of the empty stage.

Daniel placed the box between them.

Therapy had taught them to speak without turning every disagreement into a trial.

Amelia admitted that secrecy allowed her to control the timing and avoid the risk that Daniel might warn his family.

Daniel admitted that some part of him might have warned Celeste before seeing the evidence.

The truth did not make Amelia’s silence right.

It made it understandable.

Daniel had also hidden things. He knew Ashford Crown was under financial pressure, but he minimized it because admitting the crisis felt disloyal to his father.

They had each protected a mission from the other.

Love had become the place where both expected trust without offering full information.

“I do not want to marry you because surviving scandal proves we are meant to be together,” Amelia said.

“Good. That sounds like a terrible reason.”

“I want to marry you after we learn whether ordinary life works.”

“What qualifies as ordinary?”

“Groceries. Laundry. Disagreeing about temperature settings.”

Daniel nodded seriously.

“I remain opposed to decorative pillows.”

“That may be irreconcilable.”

He pushed the ring box toward her.

“You decide what happens to it.”

Amelia opened the box.

The diamond caught the work lights.

She did not put it on.

Instead, they agreed to sell the ring and donate the proceeds to a legal fund for employees who reported financial misconduct.

Celeste heard about the decision in jail and called it a publicity stunt.

Perhaps part of it was public.

Symbols became public once they bounced across marble in front of two hundred phones.

But for Amelia, selling the ring ended its role as a weapon.

Daniel later proposed again in their apartment kitchen using a plain gold band.

No cameras.

No inherited hotel.

No mother standing nearby.

Amelia said yes after making him finish washing the dishes.
