The Groom’s Choice

Chapter 04 - The Groom’s Choice

Daniel followed Amelia into a private sitting room overlooking the hotel courtyard.

Outside, white chairs remained arranged for a marriage that had not happened. Staff removed roses while pretending not to watch through the windows.

Daniel closed the door.

“Tell me everything.”

Amelia took off her veil and placed it on the back of a chair.

“The full story takes years.”

“We have already lost the afternoon.”

His humor was dry, but his hands shook.

She told him about Samuel’s bank box, the forged partnership release, and the debt acquisition. She explained that Hart Meridian did not yet own Ashford Crown. It controlled the senior loans and had appointed a receiver to prevent asset transfers.

Daniel listened without interrupting.

When she finished, he asked the question that mattered most.

“When did you know who I was?”

“The night we met.”

They had met at an airport during a weather cancellation. Daniel introduced himself by first name, but a business magazine lay open beside him with his photograph on the cover.

“And you still spoke to me?”

“You had the only working charger.”

“That is not romantic.”

“You offered electricity during a crisis. History has built marriages on less.”

He almost smiled.

Then the pain returned.

“Was I part of the plan?”

“No.”

“Did getting close to me help you investigate?”

“Yes.”

The honesty hurt more than a comforting lie.

Amelia continued.

“I never asked you for documents. I never used your passwords. But I learned how your family spoke about the company. I heard names. I noticed which questions made your mother change the subject.”

Daniel looked toward the window.

“You should have told me.”

“I wanted evidence strong enough that you would not have to choose between love and loyalty based only on my father’s word.”

“You made the choice for me by staying silent.”

She accepted that.

“Yes.”

The door opened without a knock.

Celeste entered, followed by the family attorney.

“Daniel, the receiver is freezing our accounts. You must sign an emergency challenge.”

He did not take the papers.

“Did Dad have a partner?”

Celeste’s eyes flickered.

“Your father employed many people.”

“Samuel Hart.”

“He was a contractor who stole from us.”

“Did Dad sign a photograph calling him an equal partner?”

“Photographs are sentimental nonsense.”

Daniel moved closer.

“Did you forge Samuel’s release?”

The attorney touched Celeste’s arm.

“Do not answer.”

Daniel saw the warning and understood more than an answer would have told him.

Celeste changed tactics.

“She hid this from you. She stood beside you in a wedding dress while planning to seize your inheritance.”

Daniel looked at Amelia.

Then at the unsigned emergency challenge.

He tore it in half.

“My inheritance is not a defense against fraud.”

Celeste went still.

“You choose her?”

May you like

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“I choose the truth. I am still learning whether she did.”
