The Man Who Vanished

Chapter 07 - The Man Who Vanished
Victor Lane was found in a private medical clinic in Montreal under another name.
He claimed he suffered a nervous collapse and fled because Celeste blamed him for the default.
Canadian authorities discovered three encrypted drives in his luggage.
Victor fought extradition.
Then Sarah received an email scheduled weeks earlier.
If you are reading this, Celeste has decided I am disposable.
The message contained one password and a photograph of a red ledger.
Victor proposed a deal.
He would explain Ashford Crown’s hidden ownership structure in exchange for immunity from financial charges.
Prosecutors refused full immunity but offered consideration for cooperation.
Victor began talking.
He had joined Ashford Crown in 1990 as a junior accountant. Samuel discovered that construction invoices were being inflated to create cash reserves outside the partnership books. William knew some expenses were exaggerated but believed the money was used to survive a recession.
Celeste knew the cash was being redirected into private land purchases.
When Samuel threatened to report the scheme, Celeste and Victor altered the partnership documents. William signed several pages without reading the attachments.
Then a fire destroyed the original accounting room.
The fire was labeled electrical.
Victor admitted it was deliberate.
“Who started it?” the prosecutor asked.
Victor looked toward the camera.
“William.”
Amelia felt the room tilt.
Daniel stopped breathing.
Victor explained that William did not know Celeste had forged Samuel’s release. He believed the fire would destroy evidence of temporary off-book reserves and protect both partners from tax charges.
After the fire, Celeste told him Samuel had stolen the reserve and disappeared.
William believed her.
For years.
“When did he learn the truth?” Amelia asked.
“Six years before he died.”
“And what did he do?”
Victor looked ashamed.
“He confronted Celeste. She told him exposing the fraud would destroy Daniel, the employees, and the hotels. He chose silence.”
Daniel stood and left the interview room.
Amelia found him in the hallway, staring through a window at the city.
“My father knew,” he said.
“Yes.”
“He let Samuel die disgraced.”
“Yes.”
Daniel looked at her.
She did not soften the answer, but she stayed.
“My father was not the man I thought.”
“He may have been more than one thing.”
“That sounds like mercy.”
“It is accuracy.”
William helped build the company. He loved Daniel. He later discovered a terrible truth.
And he failed to correct it.
A person could be loving in one room and cowardly in another.

The complexity did not excuse him.
It made the betrayal human enough to hurt.
