The Sentence

Chapter 16 - The Sentence

At sentencing, dozens of Ashford Crown employees submitted statements.

Some asked for leniency because Celeste had funded scholarships and medical care.

Others described pension losses, intimidation, and retaliation.

Both sets of memories were true.

Celeste had practiced generosity when generosity reinforced loyalty. She had also punished anyone who threatened control.

The judge asked Amelia to speak.

She stood without prepared pages.

“My father spent half his life waiting for institutions to admit what powerful people already knew. I do not ask the court to make Celeste suffer in proportion to his suffering. That calculation is impossible.”

Celeste watched her.

“I ask for a sentence that states clearly that preserving a company does not excuse stealing ownership, destroying records, or manufacturing a public lie. Good results in one room do not purchase immunity for harm in another.”

Daniel spoke next.

“I love my mother. I also believe she is responsible. Those statements are not opposites.”

Celeste’s expression finally broke.

The judge sentenced her to fourteen years, with restitution and forfeiture of assets obtained through the fraud.

Victor received seven years after cooperation.

Martin received five.

Several former directors paid civil penalties and were barred from fiduciary roles.

The old judge lost his pension.

No sentence restored Samuel’s career or William’s chance to confess.

Justice remained incomplete.

But incomplete did not mean meaningless.

After the hearing, Celeste asked to speak with Daniel privately.

Amelia waited outside.

Celeste told him she had done everything because she feared losing him, the company, and the life she built.

Daniel answered, “You lost them by treating them as things you could own.”

She asked whether he would visit.

“I do not know yet.”

“Does Amelia decide?”

“No. That is what you still do not understand.”

He left before anger could replace honesty.

In the hallway, Amelia did not ask what Celeste said.

Daniel told her anyway.

That voluntary sharing was small.

It was also the opposite of the secrecy that had defined both families.
