The Nurse Who Remembered

Chapter 11 - The Nurse Who Remembered
The nurse assigned to Thomas during his final night had left the hospital months later. Her name was Maya Chen, and she now worked at a rural clinic two counties away.
Rebecca and Officer Ortega found her after midnight.
Maya remembered Thomas because he had been unusually alert before surgery. He joked about hospital coffee and asked her to call his wife if anything changed.
Then Vanessa arrived carrying a folder from Dr. Mercer.
“She said it contained updated medication instructions,” Maya explained. “The order had Mercer’s electronic signature.”
“Did you administer it?”
“No. The dosage looked wrong. I called the pharmacy.”
Before the pharmacist responded, Baines entered with the hospital director. Maya was removed from the case for questioning a specialist’s order.
Another nurse administered the medication.
That nurse had since died in a car accident.
Maya had kept a photograph of the disputed order because she feared she would be blamed. The image showed Mercer’s signature, but digital analysis revealed it had been copied from an earlier prescription.
Vanessa had delivered the order. Baines had forced it through. Mercer had created the drugging system used on Eleanor and Daniel.
Responsibility did not belong to one person. It was shared like profit.
Maya also remembered Thomas asking for a telephone. The hospital call log showed one outgoing call to Whitmore Hall at 11:43 p.m.
Eleanor had no memory of receiving it.
At the mansion, the old landline still stored voicemail on a separate machine in the basement office. The device had been unplugged but not erased.
Rebecca restored power.
Thomas’s voice filled the small room.
“Ellie, if you hear this, Charles knows. Do not sign anything. Rebecca will understand the blue book. Daniel is not part of it. Protect him from the woman he brought home.”
A noise sounded in the background.
Thomas spoke again, softer.
“Someone is coming. I love you.”
The message ended.
Daniel sat on the basement steps and wept.
For months he had believed his father died disappointed in him. Baines had used that shame to control him.
Eleanor placed a hand on her son’s head.
“Your father’s last clear thought was to protect you,” she said.
Rebecca replayed the final seconds.
Beneath Thomas’s voice was the sound of a cart rolling over tile, followed by a woman saying one word.
“Ready?”
May you like
The voice was faint, but Eleanor recognized it.
It belonged to Vanessa.
