The Trial of Three Lies

Chapter 18 - The Trial of Three Lies

The prosecution described the conspiracy as three lies.

The first lie declared Rebecca dead.

The second declared Eleanor incompetent.

The third declared Daniel too sick to resist.

Together, those lies created a legal path to steal Whitmore Manufacturing and conceal the sale of Project Lantern.

Vanessa testified against Baines and Mercer, hoping to reduce her sentence. On the stand, she portrayed herself as a frightened woman manipulated by powerful men.

Eleanor’s attorney asked one question.

“Who locked the gate?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“I did.”

“Who placed the key in her pocket?”

“I did.”

“Who watched Mrs. Whitmore beg to enter her own home?”

Vanessa’s voice became small. “I did.”

No larger conspiracy could erase those choices.

Dr. Mercer admitted creating the medication schedule but denied intending Thomas’s death. Digital records showed he supplied the drugs and falsified prescriptions. Vanessa’s delivery of the forged order and Baines’s pressure on hospital staff completed the chain.

Baines never apologized. He argued that Thomas had endangered the company by refusing a profitable foreign partnership. He called the family sentimental, naive, and unqualified.

Then prosecutors played his confession from the old factory.

Everyone made a small choice. That is how respectable people commit murder.

The jury heard his own philosophy and used it against him.

Baines was convicted on every major count. Vanessa and Mercer were also convicted, though their cooperation reduced some penalties.

Outside the courthouse, reporters asked Eleanor whether she felt victorious.

“No,” she said. “Victory is what people call justice when they have not counted the dead.”

That evening, the family visited Thomas’s grave.

Samuel stood apart until Daniel invited him closer.

Rebecca placed a copy of the restructured company charter beside the headstone.

“You protected us badly,” she said to her father. “We are trying to do better.”

Eleanor did not leave flowers.

She left the brass key from the blue book.

Some doors, she had learned, should never remain locked simply because the dead were afraid of what waited behind them.
