The Daughter Who Returned From the Dead

Chapter 02 - The Daughter Who Returned From the Dead

The first officer cut the padlock while the second blocked Vanessa’s path to the house.

Eleanor stepped through the open gate and collapsed against Rebecca. Her daughter smelled of cold air, leather, and the faint metal scent of military buttons. It was real. The heartbeat beneath the uniform was real.

Vanessa immediately changed her expression from panic to concern.

“Colonel Whitmore, this is a family misunderstanding. Eleanor has vascular dementia. She wanders, she invents things, and she can become physically combative.”

Rebecca looked at the fading bruises on her mother’s wrist. “Did she invent those?”

“She fell.”

“Both wrists?”

Officer Luis Ortega picked up the broken padlock. “Ma’am, why was an elderly resident locked outside the property?”

Vanessa lifted her chin. “For her own safety.”

“Outside the gate?”

Before Vanessa could answer, Daniel appeared in the front doorway. He looked older than Eleanor remembered from breakfast. His shirt was wrinkled, his eyes bloodshot, and a strip of white medical tape marked the inside of his elbow.

“Rebecca?” he said.

Rebecca turned on him. “You told Mom I was dead?”

Daniel stared at Vanessa, then at the police. “What are they doing here?”

“I called them,” Rebecca said. “Three weeks ago, someone used Mom’s email account to cancel my emergency leave request. Yesterday, a military family liaison tried to reach her and was told she had been moved to a private memory facility. The facility had no record of her.”

Vanessa laughed too quickly. “Administrative mistakes happen.”

“So do forged casualty notices,” Rebecca replied.

Eleanor pointed toward the house. “The letter is in Thomas’s desk. Unless she burned it.”

Vanessa’s eyes flicked toward an upstairs window.

Officer Ortega noticed. “We’ll need permission to enter.”

“This is my property,” Eleanor said.

Vanessa pulled a folded document from her handbag. “Not anymore. Eleanor transferred the estate into the Whitmore Family Protection Trust. I am the acting trustee.”

Rebecca took the pages and read the signature line.

The name looked like Eleanor’s handwriting, but the final stroke slanted left. Eleanor had not written that way since arthritis stiffened her thumb.

Rebecca handed the document to Officer Ortega.

“My mother signs with her right hand,” she said. “That signature was produced by someone using the left.”

Daniel’s face drained of color.

Vanessa looked at him with a warning so sharp it might have cut glass.

Rebecca saw it.

For the first time, she understood that her brother might not be Vanessa’s partner.

He might be her next prisoner.
