The Performance of a Broken Family

Chapter 08 - The Performance of a Broken Family

The next morning, Whitmore Manufacturing released a carefully worded statement.

Eleanor had suffered a medical episode. Vanessa was cooperating with authorities. Rebecca had returned unexpectedly. The family requested privacy.

It sounded like defeat.

That was intentional.

Baines called Daniel within twenty minutes.

“My boy,” he said warmly, “this scandal could destroy the company. You need to separate family emotion from corporate responsibility.”

Daniel put the call on speaker while Officer Ortega recorded.

“What do you want me to do?”

“Attend tomorrow’s emergency board meeting. Confirm the trust transfer. Your mother is no longer capable of managing her shares.”

Daniel hesitated exactly as rehearsed. “Rebecca found some records.”

“What records?”

“A blue ledger.”

Silence.

Then Baines laughed. “Your father kept dozens of ledgers.”

“This one has Red Cedar payments.”

The warmth vanished from his voice. “Bring it to me.”

Daniel said Rebecca had locked it in the mansion safe.

Baines instructed him to retrieve it before the board meeting. He also said Vanessa must be released, because she alone understood the trust structure.

He did not know Vanessa had already begun negotiating with prosecutors.

Faced with evidence of elder abuse, forgery, drugging, and conspiracy, Vanessa abandoned loyalty quickly. She admitted Baines recruited her to marry Daniel and gain control of the family office. She claimed she never intended anyone to die.

“Dr. Mercer handled Thomas,” she said. “Baines told me it would only weaken him before the surgery.”

Rebecca watched the interview through one-way glass.

Vanessa cried beautifully, but the tears arrived whenever they were useful.

“Why fake my death?” Rebecca asked when officers allowed her into the room.

Vanessa looked at her. “Because you were the one person your mother would believe over me.”

“And Daniel?”

“He was supposed to inherit the voting shares after Eleanor was declared incompetent. Then his heart condition would make him resign.”

“His imaginary heart condition.”

Vanessa lowered her voice. “Baines said no one questions a grieving widow twice.”

Rebecca nearly crossed the table.

Eleanor’s hand stopped her.

“No,” the old woman said. “Let her finish destroying herself.”

Vanessa then revealed the date of Baines’s final plan.

At the emergency board meeting, Daniel would confirm the trust, Baines would take temporary control, and Whitmore Manufacturing would be sold to a foreign investment group before the fraud became public.

The sale documents were already prepared.

All they needed was Eleanor’s silence.
