A Death Reopened

Chapter 07 - A Death Reopened

The county medical examiner agreed to review Thomas Whitmore’s death after Rebecca presented the ledger and the toxicology evidence from Eleanor and Daniel.

The hospital had preserved a blood sample. A new analysis found traces of the same sedative Vanessa used in the house, combined with a medication capable of lowering blood pressure during surgery.

It did not prove murder. It proved Thomas had been given something not listed in his chart.

Dr. Mercer had been the consulting physician who approved the preoperative medication.

By evening, he was missing.

His brother Caleb was found at a motel near the interstate. He admitted delivering the false casualty notice but claimed he believed it was part of a private family intervention.

“Vanessa said the old lady needed a shock,” he told police. “She gave me two thousand dollars and an envelope.”

Caleb also identified the man who printed the forged documents, a former insurance investigator named Martin Vale.

Vale had done more than forge letters. He created fake emails between Rebecca and Daniel, false medical reports, and the trust transfer.

When police arrested him, he asked for immunity before they even described the charges.

“Vanessa is not the top,” Vale said. “She takes orders.”

Rebecca expected him to name Dr. Mercer.

Instead, he named Charles Baines, chairman of Whitmore Manufacturing and Thomas’s closest friend for forty years.

Eleanor refused to believe it.

“Charles carried Thomas’s coffin,” she said.

“That may be exactly why Dad never suspected him,” Rebecca replied.

Baines controlled the company board. The shell contracts in the blue ledger required his approval. Vanessa had access to the family, but Baines had access to the empire.

Daniel looked physically ill. “He mentored me. He told me Vanessa was the only person keeping this family together.”

Eleanor’s expression changed.

“What?” Rebecca asked.

“Charles introduced Vanessa to Daniel.”

The room fell quiet.

Five years earlier, Vanessa had appeared at a charity gala as a consultant for one of Baines’s foundations. Within months, she was dating Daniel. Within a year, she was inside the family office.

What had looked like romance now resembled placement.

Rebecca wanted Baines arrested immediately, but Officer Ortega warned that Vale’s statement was not enough. They needed proof linking Baines to the fraud and Thomas’s death.

Eleanor closed the blue ledger.

“Then we let him believe Vanessa succeeded,” she said.

Daniel stared at his mother.

Rebecca smiled for the first time all day.

The woman Vanessa called confused had just designed the most dangerous part of the investigation.
