Vanessa’s Final Bargain

Chapter 12 - Vanessa’s Final Bargain
Vanessa stopped pretending innocence after hearing the voicemail.
She offered prosecutors the location of Baines in exchange for protection and a reduced sentence.
According to Vanessa, Baines maintained a hunting lodge in the mountains under the name Charles Bell. He kept emergency cash, weapons, and copies of every transaction there. If cornered, he planned to cross the northern border using an old logging road.
Rebecca wanted to join the arrest team. Officer Ortega refused.
“You are a witness and a family member.”
“I am also the person he tried to erase.”
“That is why you stay here.”
Eleanor agreed with the officer. “A soldier should know the difference between courage and impatience.”
Rebecca did not enjoy being corrected by her mother, which made Eleanor smile for the first time since the gate.
Police reached the lodge before dawn. It was empty but recently used. A coffee cup was warm. Tire tracks led north.
Inside a locked cabinet, officers found company records, forged passports, and a digital recorder. Most files documented the theft, but one folder contained surveillance photographs of the Whitmore family.
Baines had watched them for years.
There were pictures of Daniel at therapy, Rebecca at military ceremonies, Eleanor visiting Thomas’s grave, and Vanessa meeting Dr. Mercer.
One photograph disturbed Eleanor more than the others.
It showed Baines speaking with Thomas in the hospital parking lot six weeks before the surgery. Thomas looked furious. Baines looked frightened.
On the back, someone had written: HE KNOWS ABOUT PROJECT LANTERN.
The blue ledger contained no Project Lantern.
Daniel searched the company archives and found only a canceled research program involving secure microelectronics for military navigation systems. The official record said the project failed.
Rebecca knew that was impossible. Her unit had recently tested equipment based on the same concept.
Baines had not merely stolen company money. He had secretly sold restricted technology developed under a government contract.
That explained the foreign buyer, the forged death documents, and the urgency.
It also meant the case was no longer only a family conspiracy.
Federal agents arrived at Whitmore Hall before noon.
Their lead investigator, Special Agent Naomi Grant, placed a map on the table.
Baines had not driven toward the border.
Traffic cameras showed his sedan returning south.
“He is coming back to the city,” Grant said.
Eleanor looked through the window at the iron gate.
“He forgot something,” she replied.

Rebecca understood immediately.
“The real Project Lantern files.”
