The Woman In Black

Chapter 10 - The Woman In Black

Vivian had loved Adrian in the possessive way some people love houses.

She wanted his name, his future, his place at the head of the Mercer table. She admired his charm, but more than that, she admired what standing beside him would make her. Their families encouraged the match from adolescence. When Adrian chose Rachel instead, Vivian experienced it not as heartbreak but theft.

So she told herself intervention was justice.

She intercepted calls.

Redirected letters.

Persuaded Eleanor that Rachel wanted money.

Used Adrian’s damaged memory as an empty room she could furnish.

For years, the lie became ordinary.

Then Oliver ran into the restaurant and called Adrian Dad.

Now Vivian stood in the hotel office beneath the judgment of everyone she once controlled.

“I did not cause the crash,” she said.

The investigator had not accused her yet.

Adrian noticed.

Rachel noticed too.

Vivian’s breath quickened.

“I told the mechanic to delay you. That’s all. My father wanted time to stop the announcement. The brakes were supposed to be loosened enough to trigger a warning light.”

Adrian stared at her.

“You touched my car?”

“I didn’t. Someone from the garage did.”

“And you spent seven years hiding the consequence.”

Vivian looked at Oliver. “You survived.”

Rachel stood so quickly the chair moved behind her.

“Do not speak to my son as if survival cancels what you did.”

Security stepped closer, but Rachel did not touch Vivian. Her anger needed no physical action.

Vivian’s final defense was the one she had always believed.

“People like you do not understand what families like ours have to protect.”

Rachel looked around the luxury office, then down at Oliver.

“You protected a name,” she said. “I protected a child.”

Adrian removed the engagement ring from his pocket. He had planned to give it to Vivian that evening.

He placed the unopened box on the desk.

“You will speak only through attorneys now.”

Vivian’s expression collapsed.

Not because she lost Adrian.

Because, for the first time, she had lost control of the story.
