The Empty Chair

Chapter 19 - The Empty Chair

A year after the restaurant confrontation, Adrian reserved Table Seven.

The hotel staff expected an anniversary celebration. Instead, there were only three place settings and one empty chair.

Rachel arrived in a dark green dress. Oliver wore a blue sweater similar to the one from that first night, though he had grown enough that the sleeves no longer covered his hands.

“Who’s the extra chair for?” Oliver asked.

Adrian looked at Rachel.

“For the years we missed.”

Oliver considered this, then placed the broken dinosaur on the empty plate.

“So they don’t feel left out.”

Rachel’s eyes filled.

Dinner was imperfect.

Oliver spilled water.

Adrian ordered something Rachel disliked.

A waiter nearly called Rachel Mrs. Mercer and corrected himself so dramatically everyone laughed.

After dessert, Adrian took out a small box.

Rachel’s body stiffened.

He opened it.

Inside was not a ring.

It was the cedar-box photograph professionally restored, along with copies of every letter Rachel had sent. On the back of the frame, Adrian had written no grand promise. Only:

Received. Finally.

Rachel touched the glass.

“I thought you were proposing.”

Adrian’s face reddened. “Would that be terrible?”

“It would be premature.”

“Understood.”

Oliver looked between them.

“Can you do it later?”

Rachel laughed. “Go eat your cake.”

Adrian did not ask for more.

That restraint answered part of the question she had been carrying.

The empty chair remained between them, but it no longer felt like a grave. It represented time acknowledged rather than erased.

At the end of dinner, Oliver moved the dinosaur from the empty plate into Adrian’s pocket.

“Those years can come with us now,” he said.

Adrian closed his hand around the toy.

Rachel looked at him.

“Coffee after this?”

“At your place?”

“Yes.”

Adrian smiled.

May you like

The empty chair stayed behind.

The three of them left together.
