Rachel's Choice

Chapter 14 - Rachel's Choice
Rachel did not move into the Mercer estate.
The offer arrived through Adrian’s assistant, then was immediately withdrawn when Adrian learned it had been made without asking him. That small correction mattered more to Rachel than the mansion ever could.
She stayed in her apartment.
She kept her hotel job for another month, then accepted a position with an independent events company. She wanted income untouched by Adrian’s guilt. She wanted Oliver to see that love and dependence were not the same thing.
People judged her from every direction.
Some said she was foolish not to marry the billionaire immediately.
Some said she planned the reunion for money.
Some accused her of punishing Adrian for crimes committed while he was injured.
Others treated her survival like a romance story because reality made them uncomfortable.
Rachel ignored them.
Her choice was not between Adrian and pride.
It was between repeating the old imbalance and building something new.
Saturday visits began in public places. A science museum. A park. A diner where Oliver ordered pancakes shaped like planets. Adrian arrived early every time. He followed the therapist’s advice even when it made him feel like a guest in his son’s life.
He did not buy enormous gifts.
The first time he tried, Rachel sent the electric toy car back.
The next week, he brought a library book and a package of dinosaur stickers.
Oliver approved.
One evening, after Adrian returned Oliver home, Rachel found him standing outside beneath the apartment light.
“Do you remember loving me?” she asked.
Adrian answered honestly.
“In pieces.”
“Is that why you’re doing this?”
“No.”
She waited.
“I’m doing it because Oliver deserves a father whether or not memory gives me a reward.”
Rachel’s eyes filled.
That was the first answer that did not ask her to rescue him from guilt.
She opened the building door.
“Come upstairs. There’s coffee.”
It was not forgiveness.
It was not reunion.
May you like
It was a doorway.
And this time, Rachel controlled who entered.
