The Name He Forgot

Chapter 05 - The Name He Forgot

Adrian remembered Rachel’s name before he remembered her face.

That frightened him.

After the accident, doctors told him he had lost several months of memory. He could recall business deals, childhood houses, hotel floor plans, and the exact sound of his father’s anger. But the year before the crash existed in broken flashes.

A green scarf in winter.

Coffee spilled on a legal pad.

A woman singing badly in a car.

The word Rachel written in his own notebook.

His mother explained that Rachel had been an employee who became obsessed. Vivian confirmed it. The family attorney produced a report claiming Rachel accepted money and disappeared. Adrian was weak, medicated, and ashamed of what he could not remember.

So he believed the people who spoke with certainty.

Now a child held him like home.

Oliver’s face contained details Adrian recognized without evidence. The small crease between the eyebrows. The habit of pressing his lower lip inward when afraid. Even the way the boy’s left hand curled against Adrian’s collar felt familiar, as though biology carried instructions memory had lost.

“What is your full name?” Adrian asked softly.

“Oliver James Bennett.”

James.

Adrian’s middle name.

Rachel looked away.

“You chose that?” he asked.

“You chose it,” she said. “Before the accident.”

A memory struck him so suddenly he gripped the table.

Rachel standing beside a lake.

His hand resting on her stomach though there was no visible child yet.

Him joking that if they ever had a son, James was the only name his mother could not turn into a family brand.

Adrian gasped.

Oliver flinched.

Rachel moved forward, then stopped herself. She had once known how to touch him during pain. Now she had no right she could trust.

Vivian reached for Adrian’s arm.

He pulled away.

The gesture silenced her more effectively than shouting.

“I want a DNA test,” Adrian said.

Rachel nodded. “So do I.”

Vivian’s voice sharpened. “You cannot make decisions while distressed.”

Adrian looked at her.

“For seven years, everyone made decisions because I was distressed.”

His gaze moved to Oliver.

“That ends tonight.”
