A Face From A Photograph

Chapter 02 - A Face From A Photograph

Oliver had found the photograph that morning.

Rachel kept it inside a small cedar box at the back of her closet beneath old tax papers and a dress she had not worn since before he was born. She believed the box was safe because children rarely searched beneath things that looked boring.

Oliver had been looking for wrapping paper.

Instead, he found a faded photograph of Rachel at twenty-four, laughing beside a dark-haired man outside a lakeside diner. The man had one arm around her waist. His face was younger, but unmistakable.

On the back, in Rachel’s handwriting, were two words Oliver could read.

Adrian. Forever.

Oliver had seen that face before.

It appeared on the television in the hotel lobby where Rachel worked temporary event shifts. Adrian Mercer, heir to the Halston hotel group, was attending a private dinner that afternoon. A staff member mentioned his name while complaining about extra security.

Oliver did not tell Rachel what he had found.

For years, she had answered questions about his father with careful fragments. He was brave. He loved music. He had dark hair. He was gone before Oliver was born. When Oliver asked whether gone meant dead, Rachel sometimes said yes and sometimes changed the subject.

Children understand contradictions long before adults give them language.

When Rachel brought Oliver to the hotel because his babysitter canceled, she seated him in a staff lounge with crayons and strict instructions not to move. Then she went upstairs to coordinate floral deliveries.

Oliver waited twelve minutes.

He put the photograph in his pocket and followed the sound of music into the restaurant.

There, beneath a chandelier, sat the man from the photograph.

Not dead.

Not gone.

Eating dinner with a beautiful woman in black.

Oliver stood behind a column until Adrian turned his head. The shape of his eyes, the line of his jaw, even the way he pressed his thumb against his glass matched the picture.

Hope moved faster than fear.

Oliver ran.

By the time Rachel realized the staff lounge was empty, her son had already crossed the room and called a stranger the name he had carried silently his entire life.

Dad.
