The Contract

Chapter 13 - The Contract

Vivian’s attorneys offered a settlement.

She would admit to redirecting correspondence but deny involvement in the crash. In exchange for confidentiality, she would surrender claims against the Mercer trust, withdraw from the merger, and leave the country for several years.

Adrian refused the confidentiality clause.

Rachel read the proposed agreement at her kitchen table while Oliver slept in the next room.

“She wants the story buried again,” she said.

Adrian sat across from her, too large for the small apartment chair and careful not to look uncomfortable.

“She says publicity will hurt Oliver.”

Rachel gave a humorless laugh. “People always use the child when protecting themselves.”

Adrian nodded.

He had begun learning that agreement was not the same as repair. Rachel did not need him to solve every problem. She needed him to stop creating new ones through control.

“What do you want?” he asked.

Rachel looked at him, surprised by the question.

“I want Oliver’s privacy. I want the criminal investigation to continue. I want the hotel to release staff from nondisclosure restrictions if they witnessed misconduct. And I want no public statement that turns me into your tragic lost love.”

Adrian absorbed each condition.

“Done.”

“That fast?”

“They are your terms.”

Rachel studied him.

The old Adrian had been romantic, impulsive, certain love could overpower class and family. The man before her was more damaged and perhaps more capable of humility.

She added one final condition.

“You do not get automatic access to Oliver because of blood. We build a schedule with a therapist. Slowly.”

Pain moved through his face.

Still, he nodded.

“Slowly.”

The contract was rewritten.

No hush money.

No ownership language disguised as protection.

No promise of instant reconciliation.

Only accountability, privacy, and a path.

When Adrian stood to leave, Oliver appeared in the hallway holding the broken dinosaur.

“Are you coming Saturday?”

Adrian looked at Rachel.

She nodded once.

“Yes,” he said. “If you still want me.”

Oliver frowned.

“I gave you the dinosaur. That means yes.”

Adrian smiled.
