The Board Tries to Remove Her

Chapter 12 - The Board Tries to Remove Her

The Bellweather board meeting began at nine the next morning.

Charles Vane attended through a video feed from county custody. His attorneys argued that his arrest did not invalidate previously filed motions.

The board’s emergency agenda remained unchanged: remove Emma Reed as trust protector and suspend her voting rights.

Three directors insisted the wedding scandal harmed the company.

Emma entered carrying Laura’s audit, Margaret’s recordings, and her own financial report.

“You are worried about reputation,” she said. “I am worried about stolen pensions, illegal surveillance, and two dead founders.”

A director named Paul Rennick accused her of using tragedy to seize control.

Emma projected the vendor payments onto the screen.

Rennick’s private consulting company had received nine hundred thousand dollars from one of Damon’s shell vendors.

He stopped speaking.

Maya entered with officers and served warrants on two additional directors.

The meeting dissolved into panic.

Henry called for a vote to remove every director linked to Vane’s network. The motion required Emma’s trust shares.

For the first time, she used them openly.

The corrupt directors were removed.

Henry then offered his resignation as chairman.

Ethan looked surprised.

Henry continued.

“I did not order Laura’s death. I did, however, hide what I suspected because I feared losing my son and this company. Silence protected criminals longer than it protected my family.”

The board accepted his resignation.

Emma was elected interim chair by a narrow vote.

She did not want the position.

That was one reason Maya trusted her with it.

Her first order froze executive bonuses and redirected funds to repay employees whose pensions had been stolen.

Her second created an independent review of every Bellweather property.

Her third required all surveillance systems to be logged by outside auditors.

Reporters called it a corporate revolution.

Employees called it finally being able to ask questions without losing their jobs.

But Victoria’s case remained unresolved.

Her attorneys argued she had acted under coercion from Damon.

Celia’s testimony contradicted that. Victoria designed the public humiliation herself. She selected Emma’s clutch, timed the accusation, and rehearsed the exact words with her publicist.

She wanted the cruelty.

In court, Victoria looked smaller without the gown, veil, and audience.

The prosecutor offered a plea deal requiring a full confession.

Victoria refused.

“I will not let Emma Reed write the ending of my life.”

Emma heard about the statement and felt no satisfaction.

She did not want to write Victoria’s ending.

She wanted to stop being trapped inside Victoria’s version of hers.

That evening, Ethan found Emma standing on the hotel roof.

“Do you hate me?” he asked.

“No.”

“Would it be easier if you did?”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

Below them, workers removed the giant gold initials V and E from the entrance.

For the first time, the hotel looked like itself again.
