The Woman in the Gold Dress

Chapter 13 - The Woman in the Gold Dress

Marcus Lane recovered enough to give a full statement.

He had seen Victoria place the brooch in Emma’s clutch through the hidden banquet camera. Before he could alert Maya, Damon entered the control booth and demanded the footage.

Marcus refused.

Damon struck him and ordered Celia to erase the file.

Celia pretended to comply, then copied the missing ninety-four seconds onto a memory card and hid it on Marcus.

The phrase he spoke after waking—“the woman in gold”—had a second meaning.

Another woman wearing a gold dress entered the bridal corridor before the theft.

Security stills showed a blonde woman in her sixties.

Ethan recognized her as Judith Vane, Charles’s supposedly estranged sister.

Judith had worked as Margaret’s personal assistant until the year Laura died.

Police located her in a nursing residence under a false surname.

She was not ill.

She had been hiding.

Judith agreed to speak only with Emma.

She confessed that Charles forced her to approve the payment to Damon using Margaret’s credentials. When Laura died, Judith wanted to go to police. Charles threatened her daughter.

Years later, Margaret discovered the forged transaction. Judith told her everything.

Margaret recorded Vane’s confession during a private dinner.

The recording disappeared after Margaret’s death.

“Where is it?” Emma asked.

Judith looked at the sapphire brooch.

“Margaret hid it in the stone.”

The original sapphire was hollowed at the back. Inside was a microscopic storage capsule containing the audio file.

But the stone had been removed from the brooch before Victoria stole it.

Judith had taken it.

On the wedding morning, she entered the hotel in the gold dress and hid the sapphire somewhere Damon would never search.

“In the bridal bouquet,” she said.

The bouquet had been thrown from the hotel steps after the ceremony.

A guest named Rachel Kim caught it.

Maya contacted her.

Rachel had placed the flowers in water at her apartment. Inside the stem wrapping, investigators found the original sapphire.

A laboratory extracted the capsule.

Margaret’s recording captured Charles Vane admitting he ordered Damon to “make Laura afraid enough to stop.” Damon warned that damaged brakes could kill her. Vane replied, “Then make certain the paperwork is clean.”

The recording also captured Vane discussing Margaret’s medication.

It was enough to charge him with both deaths.

Emma listened once.

She did not listen again.

Evidence could restore the truth without restoring the women.

Judith asked whether Emma could forgive her.

Emma thought of Henry, Celia, Ruthless boardrooms, and frightened people who mistook delay for mercy.

“Tell the truth in court,” she said. “Forgiveness can wait.”
