The Audit Beneath the Flowers

Chapter 06 - The Audit Beneath the Flowers

The police wanted to arrest Victoria immediately.

Maya asked them to wait ten minutes.

“If Damon knew the hidden camera was recording,” she said, “then this card may be bait.”

The video proved the brooch was planted, but it could also draw investigators toward a controlled story while larger evidence disappeared.

Emma opened her audit on the lounge screen.

The questionable payments formed a pattern around major Bellweather events: political dinners, charity auctions, celebrity weddings, and corporate retreats. Inflated invoices moved money into shell companies, but the same events also placed powerful people inside private hotel suites.

Maya searched the security archive.

Several suite recordings had been accessed illegally.

The Hales were not merely stealing from Bellweather.

They were collecting secrets.

Damon used wedding vendors as cover to install temporary cameras, capture compromising footage, and pressure wealthy guests into business deals.

Victoria’s marriage to Ethan would give the Hale family permanent access to Bellweather properties.

“The wedding was an acquisition,” Emma said.

Ethan stood near the window, still wearing his tuxedo.

“And I was the signature.”

Henry looked older than he had that morning.

He admitted that Damon approached him two years earlier with photographs of Ethan leaving a treatment center. Ethan had sought help after a period of prescription medication dependency following his mother’s death.

Damon threatened to release the images during Ethan’s first campaign for the company presidency.

Henry agreed to hire Hale Strategic Partners.

“You let him inside,” Emma said.

“I thought I was protecting my son.”

Ethan’s voice was quiet.

“You protected my reputation by giving a criminal access to our hotels.”

Henry did not defend himself.

Victoria’s attorneys demanded she be allowed to leave. Police arrested her for evidence tampering and conspiracy.

As officers removed her pearl veil and placed her in handcuffs, Victoria looked only at Ethan.

“You will regret choosing her.”

Ethan shook his head.

“This was never a choice between you and Emma. It was a choice between truth and the life you designed for me.”

Victoria turned toward Emma.

“My father will destroy this place before he lets you own it.”

At that moment, alarms sounded in the archive room.

Someone had triggered the fire suppression system.

Water and chemical foam poured over decades of paper records. Hard drives overheated after the cooling system shut down.

Damon had used the wedding as a distraction to erase Bellweather’s past.

Emma ran toward the archive.

Behind one floral wall in the ballroom, a maintenance door stood open.

On the floor lay a trail of crushed white rose petals leading into the old hotel tunnels.

Damon had never left.
