Ninety-Four Missing Seconds

Chapter 05 - Ninety-Four Missing Seconds

The ceremony had been filmed by six professional cameras and more than a hundred phones.

The theft had been captured by none.

Maya reconstructed the timeline.

At 4:06 p.m., Emma handed her clutch to Celia.

At 4:09, Celia carried it toward the family table.

At 4:11, camera fourteen went dark.

At 4:12, Victoria’s maid of honor entered the bridal suite.

At 4:14, Damon’s access card opened Suite 1904.

At 4:16, the sapphire brooch disappeared.

At 4:18, Celia returned Emma’s clutch to the ballroom.

Ninety-four seconds were missing from the banquet camera facing the family table.

The deletion had been made from the hotel’s central editing station.

Only three people had access: Maya, Henry, and the head of audiovisual services, Marcus Lane.

Marcus had vanished.

His car remained in the employee garage. His phone had been found in a trash bin with the battery removed.

Emma and Maya searched the audiovisual booth. Behind a rack of cables, they found a broken hearing aid.

Marcus wore two.

A drop of blood marked the edge of the control desk.

This was no longer only fraud.

Someone had hurt the man who recorded the truth.

Police sealed the hotel.

Guests were moved to the east ballroom while officers searched service tunnels, storage rooms, and the underground loading dock.

Victoria accused Emma of staging the crisis.

“You arrived with an audit,” she said. “You knew exactly how to turn a wedding into an investigation.”

Emma looked at the pearl-covered gown, the perfect hair, and the anger that appeared whenever Victoria lost control of a room.

“You planted a family heirloom in my bag.”

“You cannot prove that.”

“Not yet.”

Victoria stepped closer.

“You think owning part of a hotel makes you important. You lived in a one-bedroom apartment while my family had dinner with governors.”

“My mother taught me that money is most dangerous when people mistake it for character.”

Victoria smiled.

“Your mother died owing mine everything.”

Emma’s chest tightened.

“My mother never knew your family.”

“That is what Henry told you.”

Before Emma could respond, an officer called Maya to the loading dock.

They found Marcus inside a locked linen cart. He was unconscious but alive, with a head injury and zip ties around his wrists.

Taped beneath his shirt was a small memory card.

At the hospital, Marcus woke long enough to say one sentence.

“The bride told them to erase the woman in gold.”

Emma had worn champagne.

Under ballroom lights, it looked gold.

The memory card contained the missing ninety-four seconds.

Celia set Emma’s clutch on the table.

Victoria approached alone.

She opened the bag, placed the brooch inside, and wiped the clasp with a cloth.

Then Damon entered and handed her a small clear film carrying Emma’s lifted fingerprints.

The camera had recorded everything.

But the final five seconds showed something even more disturbing.

Damon looked directly at the hidden lens.

He knew it was there.

And he smiled before the video ended.
