The Tunnel Beneath the Ballroom

Chapter 07 - The Tunnel Beneath the Ballroom
The original Bellweather Hotel had been built during Prohibition.
Beneath its kitchens and ballrooms ran a network of narrow passages used to move liquor, musicians, and politicians without public attention. Most had been sealed during renovations.
Henry knew of one entrance.
Emma knew of another.
As a child, she and Ethan had discovered a false panel behind the ballroom stage. Margaret found them inside the tunnel and made them promise never to return.
Now the panel stood open.
Maya, two officers, Emma, and Ethan entered with flashlights. Henry remained behind to coordinate the archive rescue.
The tunnel smelled of wet stone and old dust. Electrical cables ran along one wall, recently installed. Damon had turned forgotten architecture into a private surveillance network.
They found a room beneath the bridal suite containing monitors, recording devices, and labeled folders.
SENATOR KLINE.
JUDGE MERCER.
COLE, HENRY.
COLE, ETHAN.
REED, EMMA.
Emma opened her folder.
It contained photographs of her apartment, office, grocery store, and mother’s grave. Damon had watched her for years.
One image showed Laura Reed’s damaged car after the crash.
On the back, someone had written: ORIGINAL PROBLEM RESOLVED.
Ethan read the words over her shoulder.
“Damon knew your mother?”
Victoria’s comment returned to Emma.
Your mother died owing mine everything.
A noise echoed deeper in the passage.
Maya ordered Emma and Ethan to remain behind while officers advanced.
They did not.
At the end of the tunnel, Damon stood beside an old service elevator. He wore a catering jacket and held a metal case.
“You should have stayed at the party,” he said.
Maya raised her weapon.
“Put the case down.”
Damon pressed a button on a remote.
The tunnel lights went out.
A metal fire door dropped between Maya and the others. Ethan pushed Emma aside as Damon swung the case at him. The edge struck Ethan’s shoulder.
Emma grabbed a loose cable and pulled. A work light crashed, illuminating Damon’s face.
He ran into the elevator.
Before the doors closed, Emma threw her audit binder between them. The doors reopened automatically.
Ethan tackled Damon.
The metal case slid across the floor and burst open.
Inside were passports, cash, a hard drive, and the other half of Margaret’s sapphire brooch.
The gemstone on the wedding brooch was a replacement.
The original sapphire had been removed years earlier.
Police reached them through a side passage and arrested Damon.
As officers secured the scene, Emma examined the empty setting.
A tiny key was hidden beneath the metal backing.
Henry recognized it.
“It opens Margaret’s private vault.”
The vault had remained sealed since her death.
Damon had staged the wedding theft to obtain the brooch, not merely to frame Emma.

He had believed the key was still inside.
Someone else had removed it first.
