Margaret’s Private Vault

Chapter 08 - Margaret’s Private Vault

Margaret Cole’s vault was located behind a painting in the hotel’s oldest office.

Henry had tried to open it after her funeral, but the lock required a physical key and a six-digit code. Margaret left no instructions.

The tiny key from the brooch fit.

Emma guessed the code.

041798.

April 17, 1998—the date Laura Reed and Margaret Cole signed the first Bellweather partnership contract.

The vault opened.

Inside were original deeds, partnership agreements, photographs, and a cassette recorder wrapped in blue silk.

There was also a sealed envelope addressed to Emma and Ethan.

Margaret’s voice filled the office when Henry pressed play.

“If you are hearing this, then Damon Hale has reached further into Bellweather than I was able to stop.”

Henry sat down.

Margaret explained that Laura Reed discovered Damon’s first blackmail operation eighteen years earlier. At the time, Damon worked as a private security consultant for luxury hotels. He paid employees to install cameras in rooms used by public officials.

Laura planned to report him.

Three days later, her car crossed the center line on a mountain road.

Police called it driver fatigue.

Margaret never believed them.

She spent years gathering evidence but learned that Damon had allies inside the police department and the Bellweather board. She hid the original documents in her vault and placed the key inside the sapphire brooch.

“Henry believes silence keeps children safe,” Margaret said. “He is a good man with a dangerous understanding of protection.”

Henry closed his eyes.

The recording continued.

“Emma, your mother did not leave you only a hotel. She left you the right to ask questions powerful people fear.”

“Ethan, love that requires you to ignore truth is not love. It is management.”

Ethan looked toward the ballroom where Victoria had stood in her wedding gown.

The final portion of the recording contained a name.

Celia Ward.

The wedding planner’s mother had worked with Laura and Margaret. Before dying, she gave Celia a copy of Damon’s payment records.

Margaret instructed Celia to wait until Emma controlled the trust, then deliver the evidence.

But Celia had worked for Victoria instead.

Maya found her near the loading dock attempting to leave with two suitcases.

During questioning, Celia admitted Damon had threatened her son. He forced her to help plant the brooch and disable cameras.

“Why preserve the ninety-four seconds?” Emma asked.

Celia began to cry.

“Because your mother saved mine. I could not erase everything.”

She had warned Marcus to keep a hidden copy.

She also revealed that Damon was not the person who ordered Laura’s death.

He had been paid by someone on the Bellweather board.
