Victor’s Last Offer

Chapter 15 - Victor’s Last Offer

Victor made one final offer through his attorney.

Private settlement. No criminal complaint. No corporate scandal. He would resign quietly, retain certain shares, and agree never to contact the family. In exchange, Eduardo would keep the recording private and describe the incident as a misunderstanding during medical recovery.

The word misunderstanding returned like a fly.

Eduardo read the proposal in his study with Clara across from him and Sofia doing homework on the rug nearby because she had decided important rooms needed witnesses.

“No,” Eduardo said before finishing the second page.

Clara took the paper. Her expression hardened.

“He wants you to call abuse a misunderstanding.”

Eduardo looked at Sofia.

She was pretending not to listen badly.

“I have done that enough in my life,” he said.

Clara softened.

Eduardo rolled his chair toward the window. Outside, Chicago glimmered beyond the mansion gates. For years, he believed power meant never being seen as vulnerable. Victor had used that belief like a crowbar.

Now vulnerability had become evidence.

Not of weakness.

Of who could be trusted near it.

His attorney advised a full complaint. Corporate removal. Civil action. Possible criminal investigation for endangerment and coercion. Eduardo approved all of it.

Victor responded with rage.

Threats came disguised as warnings. Media leaks. Board rumors. Suggestions that Eduardo’s injury had affected his judgment.

Clara expected Eduardo to retreat into fury.

He surprised her.

He gave one public statement from his wheelchair, no dramatic staging, no readable banners.

“My judgment failed only when I mistook pride for protection. That error has been corrected.”

The statement ran everywhere.

Victor’s allies began backing away.

Sofia watched the clip once and nodded.

“Good,” she said. “He sounded like Dad again.”

Clara kissed her forehead.

“He sounded better.”
