Clara’s Anger

Chapter 17 - Clara’s Anger

Clara’s anger arrived late.

During the crisis, she had been useful. Calm. Sharp. Protective. She documented, called attorneys, arranged security, comforted Sofia, guided Eduardo through shame without drowning him in sympathy. Everyone praised her strength.

Strength can be another cage.

Two weeks later, she broke a teacup in the kitchen.

Not by throwing it. She simply set it down too hard and the handle snapped clean off. The sound was small, but Clara stood over it with both hands on the counter, breathing as if the foyer had returned around her.

Eduardo found her there.

He did not say calm down.

Marriage had taught him at least that much.

“I am so angry,” she said.

“I know.”

“No, you don’t. I am angry at Victor. At the board. At the staff who looked away. At you.”

He accepted the hit.

“I know that too.”

“You made needing help feel like an insult, and everyone around you learned to treat help like a weapon.”

Eduardo looked down at his hands.

“Yes.”

“I was trying to love you, and you kept acting like I was stealing something.”

His voice was low. “What did you need from me?”

She laughed bitterly. “Six months ago? Trust. Yesterday? Rest. Right now? I don’t know.”

He rolled closer but stopped before crowding her.

“Then I will sit here until you know.”

Clara looked at him.

It was such a simple offer. So unlike his old instinct to solve, command, buy, or flee.

She cried then, angry and exhausted.

Eduardo stayed.

No speech.

No pride.

Just presence.

Later, Sofia found the broken cup handle and asked if it was evidence.

Clara laughed through swollen eyes.

“Yes,” she said. “Evidence that moms need naps.”
