Victor Ramos Smiles

Chapter 07 - Victor Ramos Smiles

Victor Ramos smiled best when other people were wounded.

Not openly. Never openly. He smiled with concern, sympathy, professionalism. He touched shoulders at funerals. He lowered his voice in hospitals. He called himself practical when others were grieving. Eduardo had mistaken that calm for loyalty for nearly twenty years.

Victor understood power because he had never been the center of it.

He grew up adjacent to the Santana fortune, close enough to taste private schools and locked offices, far enough to know he would never inherit the name in the way Eduardo did. When Eduardo built Santana Global, Victor attached himself early. Useful. Smart. Quiet. Always available. Always slightly overlooked.

Overlooked men become patient.

After the accident, Victor saw the opening.

Eduardo’s pride was predictable. He refused help publicly and needed it privately. Board members loved strength but feared instability. Clara had moral authority but no official corporate role. Sofia was a child. If Victor could make Eduardo appear unsafe, impulsive, incapable of managing his own recovery, temporary authority would become permanent enough.

Moving the wheelchair was not meant to kill him.

Victor was too careful for blood.

It was meant to break him.

A fall in the foyer. A bruised ego. A frightened daughter. A wife forced to admit he needed supervision. Then Victor would return with papers and a soft voice.

Eduardo would sign to stop everyone from looking.

That was the plan.

What Victor did not know was that Sofia had arrived early.

What he did not know was that Eduardo’s phone had been recording.

What he did not know was that Clara, the woman he dismissed as emotional, had spent six months documenting every staff departure, every altered schedule, every time Victor isolated Eduardo from people who helped him regain strength.

By the time Victor called that evening, Clara answered Eduardo’s phone.

Her voice was calm.

“Victor,” she said, “you should come back.”

He paused.

“Is Eduardo ready to sign?”

May you like

Clara looked across the room at Eduardo and Sofia.

“Yes,” she said. “He is ready to hear you explain.”
