The First Step

Chapter 18 - The First Step
Eduardo’s first step did not happen in a ballroom, hospital, or inspirational video.
It happened in the foyer at 6:42 on a rainy Tuesday evening, with Clara holding a gait belt, Dr. Lane watching like a hawk, and Sofia sitting cross-legged on the stairs pretending to read while obviously staring.
The wheelchair was locked beside him.
Properly.
Within reach.
Eduardo stood with braces and support, sweat already darkening his white shirt at the collar. His legs trembled. His pride trembled too, though less loudly now.
“One shift,” Dr. Lane said. “Not a march. Not a miracle. A shift.”
Eduardo nodded.
Clara’s hands stayed ready but not controlling.
Sofia held her breath.
He moved one foot.
Barely.
A small slide more than a step.
But weight transferred.
His body remained upright.
The foyer went silent.
Eduardo stared down at the marble floor that once held him at his lowest.
Then he laughed.
Not because it was funny. Because joy, like grief, sometimes exits the body in strange clothes.
Sofia launched from the stair before remembering the rules and stopped herself mid-run.
“Can I hug him?” she asked Dr. Lane.
Dr. Lane smiled. “Carefully.”
Sofia hugged Eduardo around the waist, gentle as a secret.
Clara wiped her face with one hand.
Eduardo looked at the wheelchair beside him.
For months, he had seen it as proof of loss.
Now it looked like what it had always been: a tool that kept him moving while his body learned another way.
He touched Clara’s hand.
“Help me sit.”
She did.

No one called it saving.
Everyone knew it was love.
