The Santana House

Chapter 03 - The Santana House
The Santana mansion had too many rooms for trust.
Eduardo bought it after the first billion, not because he needed twelve bedrooms, but because men who grew up hearing landlords argue through thin walls sometimes mistake space for safety. He filled the house with marble, glass, black iron, and expensive silence. Every hallway had a camera. Every lock had a code. Every staff member had background checks deeper than some political campaigns.
Still, betrayal had entered.
Clara had warned him security systems only caught people who feared being seen. The most dangerous people in rich houses were often the ones invited in through the front door.
Eduardo refused to discuss that.
Especially when the subject was Victor Ramos.
Victor was Eduardo’s cousin, chief financial strategist, family in the way business families use the word when contract would sound too cold. He had become indispensable after the accident, handling meetings Eduardo found exhausting and shielding him from board members whose sympathy sharpened into ambition.
Clara distrusted him.
Sofia disliked him.
Eduardo called them emotional.
That morning, Victor had visited the mansion. He said he needed signatures for a temporary authority document. Eduardo refused without reading it fully. Victor smiled and said of course, family first, no pressure. Then Eduardo took a call near the foyer. Victor left through the front doors.
Or so Eduardo thought.
Now the chair sat near the staircase.
Out of reach.
Clara studied the angle of the wheels. The right wheel had tracked a faint crescent in dust near the baseboard. Someone had rolled it deliberately, then stopped it close enough to look accidental if no one cared to examine details.
Eduardo saw her looking.
“What?”
She pointed. “Hand on the wheel. Not a drift.”
His breathing slowed.
He hated that she was right. Hated more that someone had known exactly how to hurt him without leaving a bruise.
The front double doors shifted.
Outside, a small figure appeared through the glass.
Pink cardigan. Light brown hair. Denim shorts despite the cold because Sofia dressed like seasons were suggestions.
She opened the door and stepped over the threshold.
Her eyes went first to Eduardo on the floor.
Then to the wheelchair.

Then to the phone on the console table.
Her face went pale.
