Marcus Comes Home

Chapter 15 - Marcus Comes Home

Marcus returned to Chicago in handcuffs.

He was captured at a private airfield in Quebec using a passport under the name Michael Ward. Federal agents brought him through a service entrance at the courthouse, but cameras still caught his face.

He looked older.

Not remorseful.

At the preliminary hearing, Marcus’s attorneys argued that Daniel’s memories were unreliable due to trauma and medication. They claimed Dr. Vale acted independently and that Marcus believed Daniel posed a danger to himself.

Then Nora testified.

She described Marcus’s visits, cash payments, and instructions to increase Daniel’s medication before family anniversaries because those dates triggered stronger memories.

The former security contractor confirmed the warehouse abduction.

The clinic archive supplied signatures.

The empty coffin supplied silence no longer useful.

Marcus watched Daniel from across the courtroom.

During recess, the brothers passed within several feet of each other, separated by marshals.

“You could have had everything,” Marcus said.

Daniel stopped.

“I had everything.”

Marcus laughed bitterly. “You had the uniform, Father’s respect, Claire. You walked into rooms and people trusted you.”

Daniel looked at him for a long time.

“And you thought the only way to be loved was to remove me.”

Marcus’s face tightened.

Daniel continued walking.

Claire waited at the end of the corridor with Lily. The court had advised leaving the child at home, but Lily insisted on attending the final ten minutes from a protected room.

When Daniel reached them, Lily slipped her hand into his.

Marcus saw.

For the first time, his anger gave way to something smaller.

Loss.

Not the loss of the company.

The loss of a family he had mistaken for property.

Marcus called after them.

“Daniel!”

Daniel turned.

“I’m still your brother.”

Daniel’s eyes filled, but his voice stayed steady.

“That is the worst thing you did not manage to steal.”

Then he walked away with his wife and daughter.

Later, Maya asked Daniel whether he regretted refusing Marcus the comfort of immediate forgiveness.

Daniel looked through the courthouse window at Claire helping Lily zip her coat.

“Forgiveness is not emergency medicine,” he said. “Nobody gets to demand it because they finally stopped causing harm.”

Maya nodded and closed her notebook.
