The Name They Gave Him

Chapter 04 - The Name They Gave Him
Samuel Gray existed only on paper.
According to Daniel, that was the name stitched into his clinic clothes, printed on medication cups, and spoken by every orderly who ignored him when he insisted he had a wife named Claire.
He remembered white walls without clocks. Frosted windows. A locked courtyard. A doctor who said his memories were delusions caused by traumatic brain injury.
“When I said I was Daniel Whitmore, they increased the injections,” he told Dr. Ruiz.
The physician sat on the library floor across from him, keeping her medical bag closed until he agreed to an examination. She had known Daniel before his disappearance. Her face had gone pale the moment she saw the scar above his eyebrow.
“Do you remember the clinic’s name?” she asked.
“Lakeview Behavioral Restoration.”
Marcus spoke too quickly. “That facility closed years ago.”
Everyone looked at him.
Claire’s voice was quiet. “How do you know?”
Marcus adjusted his cuff. “It was in the news.”
Daniel’s eyes hardened. “You visited.”
“That’s absurd.”
“You wore the same cedar cologne. You stood behind the observation glass and told the doctor I was becoming dangerous.”
Marcus stepped toward him.
Daniel’s body slammed backward into the bookcase. He raised one arm over his head before anyone touched him.
Lily gasped.
Marcus stopped.
The reaction accused him more clearly than any witness.
Claire stood between the brothers.
“Leave the room.”
“This is my family’s house.”
Daniel laughed once, rough and empty. “There it is.”
The mansion legally belonged to a trust created by Daniel’s grandfather. After Daniel’s supposed death, Marcus had taken control as surviving heir. Claire and Lily were allowed to remain, but Marcus controlled the staff, gates, accounts, and board voting rights.
He had spent seven years calling generosity what was actually occupation.
Dr. Ruiz checked Daniel’s pulse, pupils, injuries, and the old marks along his arms. She found healed restraint scars at both wrists.
“This man needs hospital care,” she said.
Daniel grabbed Claire’s hand.
“No locked rooms.”
“I won’t let them lock you anywhere,” Claire promised.
Marcus moved toward the door.
Daniel looked up sharply.
“The nurse who helped me escape is alive,” he said.
Marcus froze.

“She kept copies.”
For the first time, Claire saw true panic on her brother-in-law’s face.
