The Sentence

Chapter 18 - The Sentence
Marcus was sentenced two years after the gate opened.
The charges included kidnapping, conspiracy, fraud, unlawful confinement, obstruction, and crimes connected to the defense contracts. Dr. Vale received a separate sentence. Lakeview survivors testified over six weeks.
Daniel spoke last.
He stood before the court with no notes.
“For years, I thought justice would feel like returning pain,” he said. “I imagined my brother behind a locked door, asking to be believed.”
Marcus watched from the defense table.
“But locked doors taught me something. A person can become the room that hurt them.”
Daniel looked toward the survivors seated behind him.
“I do not want revenge to be the only life this case gives us. I want records corrected. I want families told where their missing people were. I want clinics inspected by people they cannot pay. I want every patient to have a voice outside the institution holding them.”
The judge imposed a lengthy federal sentence.
Marcus did not react until marshals approached.
Then he looked at Daniel.
“Tell Lily I’m sorry.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“You can write to her when she is old enough to decide whether to read it.”
Marcus nodded once.
It was the closest thing to acceptance he had shown.
Outside, Claire waited beneath courthouse steps. Lily was nine now, taller, still carrying the wooden bird in her backpack during important days.
“Is it over?” she asked.
Daniel considered.
“The court part is.”
“What part is left?”
“Living.”
She accepted that answer.
They walked toward the car through a crowd of survivors and families. No one cheered. The day did not feel victorious.
It felt quiet.
Like a gate no longer locked.
After sentencing, Nora joined Daniel on the courthouse steps. She carried the same peppermint gum she had chewed at Lakeview.
“I used to think getting you out would be the end,” she said.
Daniel looked at the families holding corrected records and photographs of people finally found.

“It was a beginning.”
Nora handed him a piece of gum. He laughed for the first time that day.
