The House With Open Doors

Chapter 16 - The House With Open Doors

Daniel refused to sleep in the master bedroom.

He and Claire tried once. The room contained too many versions of them: newlyweds laughing near the balcony, Claire waking alone after the funeral, Marcus choosing the furniture, Daniel imagining her as a delusion.

They moved into two smaller rooms connected by a sitting area.

It was not romantic.

It was honest.

Some nights Daniel woke believing he was back at Lakeview. He would sit on the floor with his back against the wall until Claire spoke from the doorway. She never touched him without asking.

Some mornings Claire woke angry at him for being gone, then hated herself because he had not chosen to leave. Daniel told her anger did not need permission from logic.

They began therapy separately and together.

Lily became the easiest and hardest part.

She wanted seven years of fatherhood immediately. School pickup. Bedtime stories. Pancakes. Soccer practice. Every question saved since birth.

Daniel tried.

He burned breakfast.

Forgot the route to school.

Panicked at a crowded grocery store.

Cried after Lily called him Dad in public.

One evening, he told Claire, “She deserves someone whole.”

Claire looked toward the kitchen, where Lily was explaining multiplication to a stuffed bear.

“She deserves someone present.”

Daniel touched the wedding ring now returned to his finger.

“I don’t know if I can become who I was.”

“I don’t want who you were.”

He looked hurt.

Claire took his hand.

“I want the man who came through the gate. The rest we learn.”

The mansion changed.

Cameras Marcus installed were removed.

Interior locks were replaced with ones that opened from both sides.

The service tunnel was sealed.

The front gates remained open during daylight.

Neighbors complained about security.

Daniel said a house afraid of open gates was not a home.

Every afternoon, Lily waited near the drive when his therapy car returned.

She never asked whether he was staying anymore.

She simply left space beside her.

Claire also began learning the parts of Daniel that had changed. He could no longer sleep with curtains closed. He disliked cedar cologne. He needed every medicine bottle opened in front of him. Daniel learned Claire had changed too: she made financial decisions without asking permission, hated surprise visitors, and never entered cemeteries alone.

They were not restoring an old marriage.

They were building a new one from verified pieces.
