The Camera Above The Door

Chapter 06 - The Camera Above The Door

Claire found the camera because Lily did.

“Uncle Marcus put new eyes in the house,” she said.

The small black lens sat above the guest-room door, angled toward the bed and hallway. It had not been there a week earlier. Claire pulled a chair beneath it and disconnected the cable.

Three minutes later, Marcus called.

“What did you just do?”

Claire stared at the camera in her hand.

“Thank you for confirming it was yours.”

He ended the call.

Her attorney, Maya Chen, arrived before noon with two private investigators and a court application already being prepared. She was small, direct, and unimpressed by family names.

“If Daniel is legally alive,” Maya explained, “Marcus’s authority over the trust may collapse immediately.”

Daniel sat at the breakfast table, eating toast slowly as if each bite required negotiation. Lily colored beside him.

“Legally alive,” he repeated. “That sounds optional.”

Maya softened. “It won’t be.”

She photographed the hospital band, tattoo, scars, wedding ring, and the camera. She requested emergency DNA testing and preservation of all Whitmore security records.

One investigator examined the mansion’s network closet.

“Most footage routes to a private server off-site,” he said.

Marcus controlled the server.

But the gate camera had a local backup.

They opened the footage from that morning.

At 8:12 a.m., Daniel first appeared outside the gate.

At 8:14, a guard called Marcus.

At 8:16, Marcus instructed them to keep Daniel outside and wait for “transport.”

“What transport?” Claire asked.

No one answered.

At 8:21, a black medical van stopped beyond camera range.

Daniel saw the image and dropped his coffee cup.

“No.”

His breathing became ragged.

Claire knelt beside him.

“That van came to the clinic,” he said. “Every time someone tried to leave.”

Maya paused the footage.

A driver stepped partially into frame. On his jacket was a small silver emblem shaped like a lake bird.

Lakeview Behavioral Restoration.

The clinic Marcus said had closed years ago was still operating.

And it had arrived at the gate before Claire knew her husband was alive.

The investigator also found that the mansion cameras had been upgraded every year on the anniversary of Daniel’s disappearance. Marcus had told staff it was routine security. In reality, each upgrade expanded surveillance around Claire and Lily while leaving Marcus’s own rooms unrecorded.

Claire realized she had not been protected inside the estate. She had been studied.
