Lily’s Question

Chapter 05 - Lily’s Question
Daniel slept for fourteen hours in the guest room with the door open.
Claire sat in the hallway through most of it. She could not bring herself to enter the bedroom they had once shared. Marcus had redecorated it after the funeral, claiming Claire needed a fresh beginning. She understood now that he had been removing Daniel in pieces.
Lily brought a blanket and sat beside her mother.
“Is he really Daddy?”
Claire looked at the child Daniel had never known existed.
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t he come before?”
“He was hurt. And people lied to him.”
“Did he forget us?”
Claire wanted to give a safe answer. Children deserve safety, but not falsehood.
“Sometimes he remembered. Sometimes he was confused. But he kept trying.”
Lily considered this while turning a crayon in her fingers.
“Will he love me?”
The question broke Claire more completely than the gate had.
“Oh, sweetheart.”
“He knows you. He doesn’t know me.”
Claire pulled her close.
“Love can begin before people meet.”
When Daniel woke, he stood in the doorway listening.
His face was clean now. Dr. Ruiz had trimmed the worst knots from his beard and treated the bruises along his ribs. He wore an old gray shirt Claire had found in storage, one he had owned before he disappeared.
Lily noticed him and became still.
Daniel crouched slowly.
“I knew you,” he said, “even when I didn’t know your name.”
She looked confused.
“In the clinic, I kept dreaming about a little girl in a blue dress standing behind a gate. I thought she was showing me the way out.”
Lily wore a blue dress.
She glanced at Claire, then back at Daniel.
“Did I?”
“I think so.”
She walked toward him one careful step at a time.
Daniel did not open his arms. He let her decide.
Lily stopped close enough to study the eagle tattoo. She touched one wing with a single finger.
“You need a bath,” she said.
Daniel laughed.
It surprised him so much that tears followed.
Lily wrapped her arms around his neck.
His hands hovered in the air, terrified of holding too tightly.
Then Claire nodded.
Daniel embraced his daughter for the first time.
From the hallway security camera, a red light blinked.
Someone was watching.
That evening, Daniel stood outside Lily’s bedroom while Claire read her a story. He did not enter. The simple sound of a child laughing made his chest tighten more than any locked ward ever had. Claire found him there and asked whether he wanted to say goodnight. Daniel shook his head.
“Not until she asks.”

From inside the room, Lily called, “Dad?”
Daniel closed his eyes. Then he stepped through the doorway.
