Chapter 18 - Back To The Carpet

One year later, Ethan returned to the same Chicago hotel.

Rain again.

Wet pavement again.

Gold stanchions.

Red velvet rope.

Glass revolving entrance glowing with warm lobby light.

This time, Ethan arrived in a black open-collar suit that actually fit. His hair was still messy because some things refused to become polite. He carried no envelope. He did not need one.

At the rope stood a young security guard Ethan did not know. The guard smiled professionally, checked the guest flow, and stepped aside before Ethan reached him.

“Good evening, Mr. Ward.”

Ethan almost stopped.

Not because of the access.

Because of the name.

Inside, Victor waited near the revolving doors, silver hair bright under lobby light.

“You came through the front,” Victor said.

“You told me main entrances tell the truth.”

“They do.”

Ethan looked back at the wet carpet. For a moment, he saw the black envelope lying near the stanchion, Cal’s hand, guests frozen, his own breath held too tightly.

Memory did not vanish.

But it stood farther away now.

Victor followed his gaze. “You all right?”

Ethan nodded. “Yes.”

The answer surprised him by being true.

Inside the ballroom, the gala honored workers in event safety and technical arts. Ethan was not the guest of honor this time. He had requested that title go to a stage electrician from Detroit who saved three apprentices during a rigging failure.

Victor had agreed immediately.

That was how Ethan knew the change was real.

A system changes when it stops needing your pain as its centerpiece.
