Wet Red Carpet

Chapter 03 - Wet Red Carpet

The envelope lay face down on the wet red carpet.

Ethan stared at it before he checked himself for pain. That embarrassed him later, but in the moment the envelope felt more fragile than his body. His shoulder ached where the guard had shoved him. Rain ran down his neck. Camera flashes flickered behind the wealthy guests, not directly focused on him yet, but close enough that humiliation had an audience.

He did not pick up the envelope.

If he bent, Cal might shove him again. If he grabbed it too quickly, people might think he was hiding something. Rich rooms were traps built from interpretation. Ethan had spent his life watching people decide what he was before he spoke.

Cal leaned over him, blocking the rope.

“Go home.”

Ethan steadied his breathing.

“I was invited.”

“Not by anyone who matters.”

The words landed harder than the shove.

Because they sounded familiar.

Landlords said things like that when his mother asked for repairs. School counselors said them when Ethan wanted to apply to expensive colleges. Police said them when his bike was stolen and he tried to file a report. The world was full of guarded carpets, and every guard believed he was protecting something sacred from people like Ethan.

Ethan looked past Cal toward the glass revolving entrance.

“Then ask Victor Hale.”

A low ripple moved through the guests.

Victor Hale’s name had weight. Even outside the rope, even spoken by someone the room wanted dismissed, the name rearranged attention. Cal heard it too. His jaw tightened.

“You don’t say his name like you know him.”

“I don’t know him.”

“Then stop pretending.”

“I know why he invited me.”

That was almost true.

Ethan knew only pieces: his father, the missing recognition, the envelope, the gala, Victor Hale. He did not know why tonight mattered. He only knew the invitation had been real enough to make him come.

Cal stepped closer again.

This time Ethan did not move back.

Something in the revolving door shifted behind the guard.

A silver-haired man in a navy three-piece suit stepped into view.

The guests noticed before Cal did.
