Martin Ward’s Son

Chapter 06 - Martin Ward’s Son
Martin Ward had saved Victor Hale’s life in 1999.
The city remembered the gala that happened that night, but not the accident behind it. A luxury theater renovation. A donor ceiling installation. A cable fault above the private mezzanine. Victor, then a rising hotel developer, had gone behind the stage to inspect a complaint about safety delays. The lift failed while he was on it.
The official report credited emergency services.
Victor knew better.
Martin Ward, head rigger and part-time stage mechanic, climbed a maintenance ladder through smoke and sparks, secured the lift with a manual brake, and dragged Victor out before the platform dropped eight feet into the service pit.
Martin broke two ribs and never returned to steady stage work.
Victor promised to help.
He did help, at first. Hospital bills. A job offer. A college savings account for Martin’s future child. Then life grew larger. Companies merged. Assistants changed. Documents moved. Promises became foundation language, and foundation language became annual reports no one in the Ward family could read without feeling insulted.
Martin died believing Victor had forgotten him.
Ethan carried that belief like inheritance.
Now, standing on the wet red carpet, Victor faced the son of the man who once carried him out of darkness.
“I wrote to your office,” Ethan said.
Victor nodded. “I know now.”
“Now?”
“My staff buried the letter. I found it yesterday.”
Ethan looked at the wealthy guests behind the rope. “So you invited me to fix your guilt in public?”
A sharp silence followed.
Cal stared as if Ethan had just slapped the chairman.
Victor’s expression did not harden.
“No,” he said. “I invited you because your father’s name belongs inside tonight. My guilt is simply late.”
That answer unsettled Ethan because it sounded honest.
Victor looked toward the open doors.
“Come inside.”
Ethan glanced at Cal.

The guard could not meet his eyes.
