The Name Everyone Heard

Chapter 05 - The Name Everyone Heard
Ethan had imagined meeting Victor Hale a dozen different ways.
In a quiet office. Behind a desk. Maybe after waiting three hours in a lobby while assistants decided whether he was worth the chairman’s time. He had imagined anger, apology, confusion. He had not imagined rain, cameras, a guard’s hand stopped mid-shove, and the entire red carpet listening to his name.
“Ethan?” Victor asked again.
Ethan nodded once.
“Yes, sir.”
Cal’s face drained.
The guard pulled his arm back carefully after Victor released it, but he did not step away. Not yet. Men like Cal needed a direct order to surrender authority.
Victor looked at him. “Open the rope.”
Cal swallowed. “Sir, I thought—”
“You did not think. You judged.”
The words were quiet.
That made them worse.
A staff member rushed forward to unhook the red velvet rope. It fell open and stayed open, the gold stanchion shifting only slightly. The black envelope remained on the wet carpet where it had fallen.
Victor bent and picked it up himself.
Gasps moved through the guests. Chairmen did not usually pick things off wet carpets. That was what staff were for. But Victor lifted the envelope carefully, wiped rain from its edge, and handed it back to Ethan with both hands.
“I am sorry,” he said.
Ethan stared at him.
The apology was too public to dismiss and too simple to trust.
“For what exactly?” Ethan asked.
A few guests stiffened. Cal looked offended on Victor’s behalf.
Victor did not.
“For leaving Martin Ward’s son outside a door he should have entered through first.”
Ethan’s throat tightened.
Victor turned toward the crowd.
“This man is not an intruder,” he said.
Cal looked sick.
Victor placed one hand lightly on Ethan’s shoulder, waiting until Ethan did not flinch.
“He is the guest of honor.”
Camera flashes exploded.
May you like
Ethan did not smile.
He was too busy trying not to cry.
