The Guest Of Honor / Chapter 8 / 19

The Room That Waited

Chapter 08 - The Room That Waited

The gala ballroom waited upstairs.

Inside, tables were set beneath chandeliers, donors arranged themselves around reputation, and an empty chair near the front remained marked only by placement, not readable text. No one in the room knew that the guest of honor had been standing outside in rain while a guard decided he looked too poor to matter.

Victor did not rush Ethan upstairs.

He brought him first to a quiet side lounge off the lobby. Glass walls overlooked the wet red carpet. The envelope sat on a low table between them.

Cal stood near the door, guarded now by Victor’s personal aide.

Ethan sat stiffly, towel around his shoulders, jaw tight.

Victor remained standing.

“Would you like to leave?” he asked.

Ethan looked up. “What?”

“You came here for answers. You were humiliated before receiving them. If you want to leave, I will not stop you. If you want to stay, I will walk beside you.”

Ethan did not expect the choice.

That made him suspicious.

“Why honor my father now?”

Victor looked through the glass toward the red carpet. “Because the foundation bearing my name removed his story from tonight’s program.”

Ethan’s eyes narrowed. “Why?”

“To simplify the narrative.”

“Meaning?”

Victor’s face tightened. “Meaning donors like heroes in clean suits, not working men who remind them their lives are built on labor they don’t see.”

Ethan laughed once, bitterly. “So they erased him.”

“Yes.”

“And you let them?”

Victor was silent.

That was answer enough.

Ethan picked up the envelope and opened it. Inside was a photo of Martin Ward, younger, grinning beside a damaged construction lift. Also a speech card, blank on one side, filled on the other with Victor’s handwriting.

Ethan read one line and stopped.

Martin Ward carried me when I could not carry myself.

May you like

His anger did not vanish.

But it gained weight.
