The Carpet Opens

Chapter 07 - The Carpet Opens
When Ethan stepped past the rope, the red carpet felt different under his shoes.
Not softer. Not grander. Just permitted.
That bothered him.
A rope should not have that much power. A guard’s hand should not decide whether a man became guest or trespasser. Yet one sentence from Victor Hale had changed every face around him. The same guests who avoided looking at Ethan moments earlier now watched him with interest. Some even smiled, as if their silence during his humiliation had been polite neutrality instead of cowardice.
Victor noticed Ethan noticing.
“People change quickly when permission changes,” the chairman said.
Ethan looked at him. “You say that like you hate it.”
“I do.”
“But you own the rope.”
Victor accepted that without defense. “Yes.”
Inside the glass doors, warm lobby light spilled over the entrance. Staff moved quickly now. Someone offered Ethan a towel. Someone else tried to take his jacket. He refused both at first. Then Victor said quietly, “Accepting help is not the same as begging.”
Ethan took the towel.
The black invitation envelope stayed in his hand.
Cal followed two steps behind, not because he was invited, but because Victor had not dismissed him yet. That frightened him more. A man who is shouted at knows the shape of his punishment. A man kept waiting begins to imagine worse.
They paused just inside the revolving entrance. The rain became a blurred wall behind them. Guests gathered at a respectful distance, pretending not to listen.
Victor turned to Cal.
“Why did you shove him?”
Cal straightened. “He refused to move, sir.”
“Did he threaten anyone?”
“No, sir.”
“Did he cross the rope?”
“No.”
“Did he present an invitation?”
Cal hesitated.
Ethan lifted the envelope.
Victor’s eyes stayed on Cal.
The guard’s voice lowered. “He didn’t look like a gala guest.”
Victor nodded slowly.
“There it is.”
Cal swallowed.

There was no policy hidden beneath the truth now.
Only prejudice dressed in a black suit.
