The Incidents at Home

Chapter 09 - The Incidents at Home
Investigators reviewed smart-home footage from Amanda’s residence.
Julian controlled the administrator account.
The videos revealed how Sophie’s “behavior pattern” was created.
Victoria placed Amanda’s bracelet inside Sophie’s desk, then “found” it.
Julian loosened a shelf before several toys fell.
The nanny—hired through Victoria—poured paint over a family photograph and told Amanda Sophie had done it.
Whenever Sophie protested, Julian described her reaction as escalation.
Amanda remembered the incidents.
She remembered asking Sophie why she lied.
She remembered the child saying, “I didn’t,” until the words became quieter each time.
Guilt overwhelmed her.
The child advocate told her not to turn guilt into a request for Sophie to comfort her.
Repair would require accurate apologies and changed systems.
Amanda began with one sentence.
“I believed reports about you before I asked what happened.”
Sophie looked at her.
“Do you believe me now?”
“Yes.”
