The Father Who Withheld the Truth

Chapter 10 - The Father Who Withheld the Truth

Grant had spent his career demanding full disclosure from witnesses while rationing truth to his children.

After Ethan died, he told Elena the investigation had ended because no evidence remained.

That was not accurate.

A witness at the marina saw Adrian’s SUV.

The witness later disappeared.

Grant concealed the statement from Elena because he feared she would confront Adrian, whom she had begun dating.

He told himself he was preserving an investigation.

The investigation was already inactive.

He was preserving control.

Elena confronted him in Julia’s country house.

“You knew Adrian was connected to the marina before I married him.”

“I knew his vehicle may have been there.”

“You walked me down the aisle.”

“I had no proof.”

“You had enough doubt to follow him for five years.”

Grant did not defend himself.

The room contained too many messages from Julia warning him against exactly this silence.

“I thought if I accused him and was wrong, I would destroy your happiness.”

“And if you were right?”

“I believed I could expose him before he hurt you.”

Elena touched the fading scratches on her chest.

“You keep arriving after harm and calling it protection.”

Grant closed his eyes.

The sentence was cruel because it was accurate.

He apologized without explaining further.

Elena did not forgive him immediately.

Love survived, but trust changed shape.

She required him to turn over every file connected to Ethan, Julia, Adrian, and the old healthcare case. No more summaries. No private judgments about what she could handle.

Grant agreed.

The files revealed another secret.

Ethan had not been working alone.

One confidential source inside Veridian used the code name Northstar.

The source provided the shell-company addresses, the penthouse meeting location, and the warning that Adrian planned to move customer funds.

Northstar stopped communicating after Ethan’s death.

Maya traced the source’s encrypted key to a device registered to Evelyn Cole.

Adrian’s mother.

Evelyn had attended Elena’s birthday but left moments before the slideshow. She told police she felt ill.

Now investigators understood why.

She knew what Adrian planned.

She also knew what Ethan had discovered.

Evelyn agreed to an interview only if Elena attended.

Grant objected.

Elena looked at him.

May you like

He stopped.

That was the first boundary he respected without argument.
