The Woman in Silver

Chapter 07 - The Woman in Silver
Serena Vale was arrested in a charter terminal outside Miami.
She carried a passport under another name and a one-way ticket to the Bahamas.
Her first interview lasted eleven minutes.
She asked for immunity.
Prosecutors offered cooperation credit instead.
Serena began with the birthday party.
Adrian ordered her to build the fake-message archive, copy Elena’s writing style, and arrange the slideshow. He planned to accuse Elena of an affair with Lucas because Lucas had already agreed to support the story.
Lucas had not agreed willingly.
Adrian threatened to expose his role in Veridian’s accounting fraud.
Serena also admitted replacing Elena’s normal necklace clasp with a weaker one. Adrian intended to remove the pendant dramatically and claim it had been purchased with stolen company funds.
He pulled too hard.
The broken chain scratched Elena.
“Why did you help him?” Maya asked.
Serena looked tired.
“Because I believed I would become his wife after the merger.”
Elena felt no surprise.
The affair began two years earlier.
Adrian promised Serena control of Veridian if she helped remove Elena from the foundation and secure the patents.
Serena’s testimony about Ethan was less complete.
She attended the penthouse meeting because Adrian said Ethan wanted money. When Ethan refused to surrender his evidence, Charles grabbed him. Adrian struck Ethan once. Ethan fell against the marble bar and lost consciousness.
“He was breathing,” Serena said.
“What happened next?” Maya asked.
“Charles said an ambulance would expose everything.”
“So you moved him.”
“I did not touch him.”
“You watched.”
Serena closed her eyes.
Adrian and Charles carried Ethan through the freight elevator. Serena cleaned the blood. Later, Adrian told her Ethan woke at the marina, attacked them again, and fell from the boat.
She claimed she did not know whether that was true.
The photograph proved she had been present in the penthouse but not at the marina.
Her testimony helped establish the cover-up.
It did not solve the final minutes of Ethan’s life.
Serena offered one more fact.
Before leaving the penthouse, Ethan hid something in the marble bar.
“I saw him reach under it during the argument. Charles searched but found nothing.”
The bar had been replaced.
The original stone was supposedly discarded.
Construction records identified the disposal company.
It closed four years earlier, but its inventory had been purchased by an architectural salvage yard in Queens.
Grant and Maya searched the yard’s records.
One entry described a twelve-foot slab of white Calacatta marble from a Manhattan model residence.
The slab had been sold.
The buyer was Julia Mercer.
Elena’s mother.
May you like
Julia had died six months after Ethan.
Nobody knew she had been investigating too.
