The Crime Scene in the Sky

Chapter 12 - The Crime Scene in the Sky
The penthouse remained sealed for nine days.
Investigators removed sections of flooring, wall panels, the bar frame, and a portion of the terrace threshold. Guests who had admired the apartment’s perfection watched technicians reveal what perfection concealed.
Under the flooring near the freight elevator, they found a second blood trace.
On the terrace railing, beneath five years of paint, they found Ethan’s fingerprint.
Inside a wall cavity, they found a broken cuff link engraved with Charles Cole’s initials.
The penthouse was not merely where Ethan had been injured.
It was where the cover-up began.
Elena returned once with Maya to identify personal property. The birthday decorations had wilted. Balloons floated near the ceiling like exhausted witnesses. The cake had hardened beneath forensic dust.
Her teal dress remained in an evidence bag because Adrian’s fingerprints and the broken necklace clasp supported the assault charge.
Maya handed Elena a box containing photographs, books, and Julia’s pendant.
The chain had been repaired.
Elena did not put it on.
At the marble island, an evidence marker remained where Grant placed Ethan’s watch.
“That moment looked planned,” Elena said.
“Your father wanted Adrian to react before he knew agents had the watch.”
“So it was a performance.”
“A controlled confrontation. The officers were waiting on the terrace.”
Elena considered this.
Grant had used her birthday party as a sting without telling her. He did not know Adrian would attack or publicly humiliate her, but he knew the confrontation could become dangerous.
Maya did not soften the fact.
“He made a prosecutorial decision where a father should have made a family decision.”
Elena appreciated the clarity.
The case against Adrian expanded.
Murder conspiracy.
Evidence tampering.
Wire fraud.
Identity theft.
Assault.
Charles remained missing.
A private-plane record showed he left for Canada two days before the birthday. Border authorities found no entry under his name.
Maya believed he used a false identity.
The investigation discovered one more thing in the penthouse.
A hidden safe behind the wine wall contained the original Mercer Foundation patent files, copied signatures from trustees, and a prepared transfer agreement dated for Elena’s birthday.
Adrian intended to obtain her electronic signature after the public accusation.
If she refused, he planned to claim she was mentally unstable and invoke an emergency spousal provision.

The humiliation was not the end of the plan.
It was the method of consent.
